Weekly Meetings Format
We have been meeting every Thursday since the end of May 2007. So far (August 2008) we have had about 60 different people coming along to play, with a regular turn out of 6-12.
The priority is to provide a friendly relaxed atmosphere where we can enjoy playing backgammon. All are welcome from complete beginners to experts. There is no compulsory money play and free tuition is available - if you’d like to try the game just turn up!
You can play competitively or just for fun.
We hold a weekly competition with all entrants playing each other in single games without the doubling cube (although gammon and backgammon wins count for higher points). Entrants can pay into a 50p pool with the night’s winner taking the pot. Any player can opt out of the pool as we have no compulsory money play. Players get championship points each week which are added tio give an overall annual champion. Annual trophies are awarded to the winner and runner up.
We also have a league ladder competition where any member can challenge others to an 11 point match. The annual league ladder leader receives a trophy. As of 28th August 2008 the last Thursday of the month will be put aside as “match” night when league ladder and friendly matches may be played. There will be no round of 1pt “championship” games on these nights.
If players are not interested in taking part in competitive games there is plenty of opportunity to play a few friendly games.
